Information & history

The railway route has withstood the upheavals of its recent past…

…mainly thanks to NÖVOG and the Association for the preservation and operation of the Reblaus Express. Along the route you will feel and enjoy the enthusiasm of the Reblaus Express personnel. In 2010 the route was 100 years old. The young Reblaus Express celebrated its 15th anniversary in 2016.

At the initiative of the contiguous municipalities, the Niederösterreichische Verkehrsorganisationsges.m.b.H. (NÖVOG) and the Experience Railway Business Unit of the ÖBB, the idea of the Reblaus Express as a special service for train excursions was born in 2002. On Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays, a historic train set, comprising two-axle cars with open platforms(!) and cycle transport car, links the charming wine town of Retz with Drosendorf on the edge of the Thayatal National Park.

The rustic  restaurant car, the Heurigenwaggon, has developed into a popular meeting point on the train. Here you can enjoy wines from the surrounding region with a hearty snack in a particularly charming atmosphere.

The train timetable allows for interesting excursions to the tourist destinations in the region. In Drosendorf a guided tour through the historic town centre is offered and in Geras-Kottaun it is possible to visit the Premonstratensian monastery, founded in 1153, with its remarkable exhibition of Baroque artefacts. Sportsmen and women can look forward to exploring the region on their own bicycle. Transporting your bicycle on the train is free of charge and they can be carried at any time in the train's cycle car.
